Thanks for your help Keith. The first link you gave was tried but the Level 1 and Level 2 cache could not be identified. Therefore the link you gave in your second email led us to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350&Product=windowsxpsp2 from where we uninstalled SP2 using the Recovery Console method. Everything is OK now with the laptop in question.

Here is a site dealing with a workaround. I don't know if you can recover from what you have, but this and the Microsoft fixer program may get you running agian.
