Back in the old days, we were warned to watch out for long printer cables.
Standard Centronix cables were supposed to be no longer than 6' or 2 meters
long, because otherwise the printer would drop letters - or worse.

Since that time, I've noticed that many offices have printers that are
attached with long cables, and they don't complain about problems.

1. Is this 6' rule valid?
2. Do modern serial cables have a different rule?
3. What is the recommended maximum length for USB cables?
4. Does the type of printer (inkjet or laser) make a difference?
5. Does the amount of memory in the printer make a difference?

The printer will be connected to an XP computer with 512 MB memory and used
in a non-networked environment.
