Harold you don't know your CPU speed? When the PC boots it
will be on the first POST screen. I don't remember where to
find it on Win98.

Only you are going to know if you have generic or the real
video drivers installed since in the Device Manager even with
generic drivers installed it's usually going to name the card
correctly. Also usually in "Display Properties" as well. In
some cases you may be able to look at the video card's
properties in the Device Manager, then go to "Driver file
details" and if the driver details are listed by M$, it's
generic.

Remember what I said in my reply on this with regards to AVG
and what's really needed. Those things loading are consuming
resources and memory and they may not be needed.

You probably also don't need Msg32 since that is a "message
server" possibly for your sound card.

What exactly are you scanning when you find the JS/loop, what
folder what file is it saying is infected? (Never mind Hugh
;-) .

FROM CLINT:
What's your CPU speed Harold? Do you have your video drivers
installed? If
you're running generic video card drivers your resources can be
lower than
they should. You could also have a resources leak. You can find
a lot on
that in search.

Are you getting this startup info just from MSCONFIG? You can't
always just
run MSCONFIG alone (or for that matter, cont-alt-del alone) and
look at each
list. You have to run both. So check cont-alt-del and see
what's listed
there.

TO JOHN
Note that I reinstalled AVG just to make sure I have all the
components and
now I also have AVG7-CC --- I suppose it is important.

RESPONSE:
With AVG and ZoneAlarm in Startup, the computer opens with 74%
system
resources free. From some of the comments from the group, I
suppose that's
not bad. In Msconfig > Startup I have:

SystemTray
Load PowerProfile (I'm keeping that on the two lines)
Keyboard Manager (Without it, I don't think my standby button
(or any other
hot keys on my keyboard would work)
AVG7_CC
AVG7_AMSVR
Zone Labs Client
AVG7_EMC
TrueVector (that's something in ZoneLabs (ZoneAlarm)

I don't think that's running Startup thin; I think it is best
for the
computer and allowing me to open whatever else I want, as I
need it. In the
Task Manager window (Ctrl/Alt/Del), I have seven items listed
immediately
upon bootup and before opening any programs:

Explorer
Avgemc
Zlclient
Avgcc
Systray
Msgloop
Msg32

Upon scanning the system with AVG, I always get this: "Could be
infected:
JS/Loop" You are asking me about CPU speed and Video card
drivers. Where
might I get that information? In my Start menu (top of the
first menu), I
keep a folder called "Computer Care" and in that folder I have
two
sub-folders called "Registry Care" (where I keep access to such
files as
Easy Cleaner, RegClean, and RegCleaner). I also have a folder I
call
"Computer Information." In addition to those folders, below
them I keep the
"computer care" files: BeClean, CleanSys, CleanUp, HDValet,
Space Odyssey,
and a few other maintenance programs. In Computer Information I
have links
to the following:

DirectX - Diagnostic Tool
Graphics Diagnostic Utility
System Monitor
System Properties
DrWatson
Resource Meter
System Configuration Editor
Microsoft System Information

In this last one, Microsoft System Information window, I
clicked the Video
line in the left pane and got the following: avivideo TM, Indeo
TM R3.1,
Indow TM R3.2, Indeo video 5.04, msh261, msh263, RLE, VD0net
Vd0Wave Video
Codec, and Video 1 --- Choosing "Video 1" I got the following
information:

Key: vidc MSVC
Description: Video 1
Group: icm
Driver: msvidc32.dll
Status: (nothing stated)
Version: 4.10.0.1998
Date: 4/23/99 22:22
Size: 45046
Loaded (nothing stated)
Tested?: (nothing stated)

I have to confess to you that I have no idea what anything in
that System
Information window means (like the Scarecrow says, "If I only
had a brain")
so maybe you can let me know where CPU speed and Video card
driver
information can be found. Everything is working fine and still,
maybe Hugh
is right and I should get myself a new Dell. Look above where
it says
"Version: 1998" --- they must have made some progress since
then ;-) ---
