You might try the Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
its free and does a total inventory of the hardware AND software on the machine. The out put is in html format so it can be read with ie or any other installed browser. It will also get any registration keys etc for the existing OS which may be of help in reinstalling as well.
