One thing you have to remember if you go with USB is to be sure
it's USB 2.0, if you don't you'll be spending a very L-O-N-G
time waiting. If you don't have USB 2.0 on both PC's, then
you'll need a USB 2.0 PCI card, but if you do that then you
should skip USB and go with FireWire; IF you have a lot you'll
be transferring at one time. USB 2.0 is theoretically faster
(480mb/sec to 400mb/sec), but it's actually slower than
FireWire in the long run. USB has more overhead and needs more
CPU resources. If you'll only be sending small packets of data
back and forth like a few KB or MB at time, then go with USB
since it may be cheaper and I'll doubt you'd notice any
difference in speed there. If you'll be transferring large
files and large packets of data, go with FireWire. You can
also get a "PC to PC" USB 2.0 to USB 2.0 stand-alone networking
cable, they are pretty new but pretty expensive.

If you have or plan on getting broadband, then the router you
use with it can be used as a LAN between the PC's and that
would be the best, easiest, and also the fastest way if you get
a gigabit router and NIC's.

I'm not aware of any way to use USB only. There are USB to NIC
converters, that will allow you to connect one computer with USB
to one with
a NIC (Network interface card). You would then need a crossover
cable.
NICS are cheap ($10.00 or so), and easy to install. It would
likely be
cheaper to buy two NICS.

Can it be possible to setup a economical networking by using
an USB cable ?
The distance between the 2 computers are less than 10 feet.
They are both
using the Window 98 ?
Beside having a USB cable , do I require any other hardware.?
