I had a similar issue with the Right-click menu-long delays. I never did understand it, but an unrelated format and re-install solved the problem. ********************************************************************
Before I reformat.....again, or do a Ghost backup, I thought I'd ask about this. As usual, a search finds nothing but ONE hit where someone had the problem, which of course has a bad link! This is XP Pro SP2. Many times when I for example drag an image's icon from a folder to the IrfanView shortcut on my Desktop, the "drag" just freezes just as the icon leaves the folder. Sort of halfway between leaving the folder and just touching the Desktop area. The freeze is a long delay of about 3-5 seconds. Mouse cursor can't move during this time. IrfanView has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. It freezes BEFORE the icon gets anywhere close to it, I'm just using IrfanView as an example. It also happens when I have two folders open and want to drag something to another folder. It happens when I left click and drag, OR right click and drag. It doesn't matter in which partition in where the files reside, NOR does it matter which HD is the point of origin. This DOES NOT happen all the time. I have about 45 items on my Desktop, BUT, they are all shortcuts, (none are actual files of any size if that matters). Other probably related items is when I click shortcuts on the Quick Launch toolbar (like Notepad, IrfanView, WordPad), there is a very long delay before they open. I have a lot of items on the toolbar, so they continue on to the extreme right where you have the >> arrows denoting more shortcuts are accessible when you click it. When I click those double arrows, there is a long delay before the other shortcut items popup in that other menu list. There's also sometimes a long delay when I click to open drives or folders, regardless of the folder size or location. ALL of these things do NOT happen all the time, maybe 25-40% of the time. When I go back to the folder, or shortcut that just experience the freeze or delay upon opening, and click it a again, it's then FINE. I've done all the usual; no malware issues, chkdsk doesn't help nor does defrag or checking drives for errors, I've even changed the location and size of the PageFile. I've cleared the Prefetch folder via a program that cleans the Prefetch folder. All partitions/drives have LOADS of free space. The most crowed one has 86% FREE space. I have all hibernation and power management disabled. Recycle Bin has minimal items and just a couple MB in total size. None of my drives are compressed. It's not my AV software since it's not set to monitor some drives or partitions and it still happens on them. Thanks, ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
