Clint, you have the general gist of CVS. On this page http://www.mozilla.org/cvs.html you can read how CVS allows you to access the source code of FF directly by using CVS.

CVS (Concurrent Versions System) Home https://www.cvshome.org/ is also a great starter point for anyone interested in the subject.
