Hi Virginia. Some stupid program messed up with the win98 winsock settings.
If I were you I would install XP on top (no need of reformatting, neither losing installed programs)
I did it several times, worked flawlessly. Just make sure to kill windows messenger after installing
XP and configuring firewall properly. You4ll find ICS setup extremely easy with XP, 10 times easier
than with 98se.
Good luck
Jorge

Somebody out there must be able to offer some helpful suggestions --
PLEASE!!
This is what I wrote on 28 February:

Have had a bit of a disaster! Win98SE 512MB ram 1.2Mhz CPU -- has never
given any problems. I recently installed a DSL USB modem and was delighted
with the increased speed of internet access. All worked well (I could also
access the Internet using ordinary dial-up connection)

Then I decided to install a network card in the computer to be able to use
DSL on my laptop as well, using Internet Connection Sharing (laptop has XP
home). Having installed the NIC together with the driver software (it asked
for the Win98 CD as well, and installed God knows what), I was then no
longer able to access the Internet. Zone Alarm Pro and AV program both gave
multiple error messages, so I uninstalled them. Connection is no problem,
either by ADSL or dial-up , but PPP connections will not work, and every
attempt to access internet addresses bring up DNS errors. I uninstalled the
Nic drivers, removed the network card, all to no avail. Still no connection
to the internet. Checked all the settings against those in another computer
which works, but still can't find what the problem is. I finally
re-installed the OS (but of course all the old system settings were
retained). Something happened when I installed the software for the network
card which I can't seem to reverse.

In desperation I have now connected my ADSL modem to my laptop and abandoned
the Win98 machine, at least for the Internet.
but I really do need it. Can't think what other options I have, except to
reformat the C: drive, which I really don't want to do.

Please can anyone suggest a solution to the problem ... I am desperate! TIA

Thank you ...
Virginia
