That's 80gb of *space* (or storage), and 512mb of memory (or RAM). How many files and folders one has just depends on what type of computing they do. Did you put them there? Well, yes, in matter of speaking, you put them all there. :-) When Windows is installed, that of course put many thousands of files on the PC, as does any install of any piece of software or drivers.
As was pointed out in another thread, your PC could be bogging down due to many things like too many things running in the background. Since you have 55% free space, I doubt the number of files are doing it. Since you defrag and that (I assume) didn't help, then try a defrag program like Diskeeper since it does a better job. Also run chkdsk if you haven't. It can be done from Windows, just right click the drive under "My computer", then "properties", then go to "tools" and click "error checking". Check both boxes if you've never done that before. Then after the next boot, go to the "Event viewer" and look for the latest entry which should be "winlogon" and that's the details of the chkdsk. If after doing that and running a power defrag program doesn't help, then it's the programs running in the BG or just a corrupted OS. Diskeeper used to be free, but it doesn't appear to be free any longer. http://consumer.execsoft.com/diskeeper/dkhome.asp?RId=1 -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) http://ComputersCustomBuilt.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Parker" Hi, I just finished defragging my computer and when it was finished, I found that I have 140,550 total files and 10,769 total folders on my hard drive. Do others have that many? Did I put them all on there? I have had my computer (HP Pavilian 7975) for three years and use Windows XP. I have about 80 gigabytes of memory on my hard drive and 55% of it free. I also have 512 MB of RAM. I do not have a business. I just use my computer for fun and information....just an old 79 year old senior citizen who would be lost without her computer!!!! Recently it seems to be slowing down. I am on cable. I feel that I should begin to eliminate some of my "stuff" as I am getting quite "bogged down" with so many folders and files. Where would be the best place to begin deleting some of these files and folders? I just deleted 2000 emails that I had saved. You all have been a great help to me for several years. Many thanks.
