Yesterday I happened to noticed I had TWO "explorer.exe"
listings in the cont-alt-del "Task Manager". I never noticed
this before and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it if they
had always been there. I did a system wide search for
"explorer.exe" and only found the ONE file that's supposed to
be in the Windows folder, plus the one in the DLL cache folder.
I of course ran the anti-malware programs (HijackThis, SpyBot,
AdAware, etc.), and did a manual scan with my AV software, on
all partitions and they are all CLEAN! (Yes, all hidden files
and system files were shown and visible during the scans). My
Start Up folder has nothing it in that I didn't put there. It
does NOT show all of the time, sometimes I cont-alt-del and
there's only the one explorer.exe. I have had no firewall
alerts.

I *AM* able to shutdown/terminate with no problem one of the
explorer.exe entries in the Task Manager that has the smallest
memory usage; of which this one I am suspect.

I of course did searches on this (such as: "two instances of
explorer.exe", "2 instances of explorer.exe", "two
explorer.exe", and "2 explorer.exe") and they all seem to point
to a Trojan or malware of some kind, yet again, all scans show
clean! I heard about something called "DlDer" adding an extra
explorer.exe, but I don't have that file either!

Sometimes, that's SOMETIMES, I am able to duplicate the
appearance of the 2nd explorer.exe when I open a folder. But,
it doesn't show up every time I open a folder! I just noticed
moments ago when I tried to delete a folder inside another
folder, that I could NOT delete the folder. I closed the
folders and tried again, still couldn't delete it. I opened
the folder again, then opened the Task Manager and that 2nd
explorer.exe was there, so I stopped it, and this time the
folder closed! I then closed out of the 2nd explorer.exe and
this time opened the folder again was able to delete this
folder I could not previously delete! Now this latest event
sounds like this:

So I'm wondering now if I am indeed infected with something
that nothing will identify, or, is some other type of issue
like the sharing violation? Could someone on XP SP2 check
their Task Manager a few times and see if you have the 2
explorer.exe entries listed? I DO have "restore previous
folder windows at logon" checked, but I always have had that
checked and I never noticed this before.
Thanks,
-Clint
