I knew this would happen; now that I have installed three new programs
(HijackThis, SpywareGuard, and ID-Blaster Plus), I'm loaded with questions.
For example, when running Hijack for the first time, I get a warning
suggesting I show an expert my scan log before deciding what to fix and what
to keep. So eenie, meenie, minie, moe, catch an expert by the toe --- since
Clint suggested them, I'm sending him three preguntas with three
attachments --- 1) the Ad-aware log, 2) the Hijack log, and 3) the Hijack
warning.

And for Ben, yes, I have a very clean computer; every file has a reason for
being here and each file is in its own place. Now if I can only clean up the
thoughts in the head that's running this computer, they'd put a statue of me
in Central Park with an inscription, "This guy has a clean head and a clean
computer. So what's he doing in New York City!!! where there's so much more
to do than clean, clean, clean.")

ORIGINAL POSTING
When everything is working fine, I often look for new ways of making
trouble. I already have Ad-aware, Spybot, Shredder, and SpywareBlaster in my
system and all is working well. Now here's a page loaded with tons of free
and shareware spyware tools.

Anyone have thoughts on what is important to have and what can safely be
ignored? And if any of the four I already have is unnecessary, feel free to
let me know --- Harold

> I've said it many times before here, and I'll say it again: one of them
will always find something the others will miss. You should also be using
"HijackThis", and "SpywareGuard" (same site as Blaster). They haven't had
any updates on it a year and half, but it's not that type of program per
say. You can exe it when going to any "questionable" websites and it gives
an added layer of protection against malware by looking for specific
behavior, more-so that its definitions.

> I don't have the link handy, but there is a website that lists BOGUS
anti-malware programs, so you should search for those terms and similar and
see if you can find it before installing any of these others. Probably a lot
of the programs on that page ARE the bogus ones. They, themselves, actually
add malware to your PC under the fraudulent guise of ANTI-malware. The ones
on that page that I use (in addition to the obvious you and I have
mentioned) are BugOff, HijackThis, CWShredder, SpySweeper, XP Anti-spy, and
AdAware plugins. Careful with BugOff and XP Anti-spy since you can mess
things up with them. FTR, I also use AdAware, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster &
Guard, and ID Blaster. -- Clint

> Harold, I thought just this morning that things had been sort of slow
around here. I was going to write and suggest that you go on another file
clean up campaign just for the sake of old times ;-) Trouble is you know too
much about things now to mess it up. --- Ben Moore
