Wow! Are my sleepy eyes deceiving me? Harold, have you come over from the
dark side? You've got WinXP? Congratulations! You are going to love it.

You may have discovered this already but you can make the start menu on
WinXP look like the start menu you are used to with Win98 by right clicking
on start and choosing properties and then classic start menu. I'm still
using the classic start menu.

Sounds like a good system.

Now the folder. This is on your windows 98 system correct? Right click on
the folder and look at the attributes, e.g. system, hidden, etc. See if it
will let you change those. Another way would be to figure out exactly where
in your file system the folder is and then boot to dos and delete it. Make
sure you are deleting the correct folder.

Subject: PCWorks: Folder that won't delete

Hello again,

I have a folder on the desktop that at one time had a back up of my start
menu
(see the "news" below). Even after deleting most of the material in it, and
after renaming the remaining folders to a, b, c, etc., I still cannot delete
it. I keep getting the message that this "Start menu" is a Windows system
folder, and cannot be deleted. What do I do?

AND NOW THE NEWS ... Took the easy way out, went to Staples, and purchased a
new computer, a Compaq/HP Pavilion with Windows XP, a 160 GB harddrive, and
521 MB memory. That cost $500 and I'll be getting a $50 rebate. At the same
time I bought a Lexmark Inkjet printer; it copies, scans, and faxes. Model
3350 and that cost $100, also with a rebate coming to me. The only thing
that
bothered me was paying $35 for a 16 foot USB cable to connect the printer
and
the tower; seems a lot to pay for a wire. In addition, I had to go for 2 new
speakers (power speakers); seems the sound board in the old computer was
stronger. The old speakers were not plugged into any outlet and the sound
was
fine; this new unit needs help from Con Ed. What I do appreciate is that
with
Staples, one can register for the rebates on Staples' website.

I just want to comment that had I started with this version ten years ago, I
would have quit within a week. Just the Start menu alone was overwhelming,
and
only because I have some Windows skills at this time am I able to cope with
this; and after a few days I'm just about finished with organizing the Start
menu and done deleting most of of the programs that are not needed by me.
One
obvious improvement is, no freezes ... but there is MUCH that is different
from 98 and I'll be posting a few preguntas as needed. ... Harold
