Hi,

All of a sudden my Windows XP multimedia programs went crazy. They refuse to play the same files they used to play before.

E.g. Windows Multimedia Player does nor play WAV, MID and AVI any more. It states: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Furter investigation gives "C00D1199: Cannot play the file". WMP still copes with e.g. WMV and MPG files.

The same can be told about the simplified version of Windows Multimedia Player: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe. However the message looks like this: "No combination of filters could be found to render the stream (Error=80040218)".

Also the venerated AMOVIE.OCX which could play several media formats,
complains ""No combination of filters could be found to render the stream".

All of the above programs used to perfectly play WAV, MID and other files...

A noteworthy thing is that the utility, C:\Windows\System32\Mplay32.exe is somehow able to play MID and WAV files. When I try to play AVI - it freezes.

I noticed also that other players - like RealPlayer 10.5, QuickTime, J. River Media Center etc. - behave in an erroneous way i.e. they don't play files the are supposed to play.

I tried every possible trick I could find on Internet, including Microsoft's own site. I reinstalled Windows Media Player, Real Player, DirectX, all codecs I could find... I checked the registry... nothing helped.

I am going to be desperate. Am I supposed to reinstall Windows XP? Lose all my settings?

Can anybody help, please? Or direct me to a place I can find help?

Kind regards
mjwiech
