It's nice to have Harold put things in perspective.
Yes, perspective is needed. So is reality. If one makes their living needing to know technicalities, continuing education is imperative.
If the true geeks are at the other end of the spectrum, there's a lot of people in between who could benefit from a little more knowledge. Some of my regulars have home businesses, serious hobbies like photography or audio recording, or are just plain interested in computers and the internet. Some of these in the middle are driven to find their own answers, and some prefer paid help.
My son just "volunteered" me to explain to a teaching artists' group about how to put up and maintain a simple web site. They want to change their monthly class schedules themselves. I will be happy to teach them what I know about a very simple WYSIWYG editor--which is really all they need. They will not be wanting to learn to code a page. A few ideas about what might constitute an appropriate "art school" page is also in order. My son is a geek that some of these people rely on when they totally mess up their computers, but has no inclination to teach what these people need to know now.
The real internet revolution, from my point of view, is the willingness of thousands of experts, in all fields to make their knowledge available to help others, just for the joy of doing it.
That about sums up my philosophy. Sometimes the trouble is in identifying the level of understanding that's needed for the necessary task. This is an area that I've found sorely lacking, which is why I'm happy to pass on what I've personally sorted out. If I turn the key in my car and it won't go, I could really care less about how to add windshield fluid. Now when the fluid runs out--I'll deal with that then!
