I've had it with you. I've kept silent, but no longer. Why is
you always have a "come back" for every single one of my posts
regardless? Do you have nothing better to do than to "police"
my every post, and twist everything I say around to suit your
own agenda??

I'm usually among the first to say that "John Q. Public" is
intellectually challenged, but even I give people 'some'
credit. It's just plain common sense to check for AV updates
every day manually, or AV software to be set to auto-updates
(which I was NOT referring to below, that was Windows
Auto-updates). I don't recall seeing in my post where I stated
to NOT USE AV SOFTWARE, nor do I see where I said to NOT UPDATE
IT. When installing AV software, they are set to update
automatically BY DEFAULT. A user would not be installing AV
software if they did not know what it was for.

XP's Native FW on SP2 is ON BY DEFAULT. It also doesn't need
to be monitored by the Center. Also, a user would not be
installing a 3rd-party FW if they did not know what it was for.
They are also on and active, and protect by DEFAULT.

Regarding M$ updates: All of my posts at this list, are of
course meant FOR the USERS OF this list and are directed at
said users/subscribers. All of my posts can be found in the
archives. Except for newbies at this list, all others are
familiar with posts at this list by myself. Those that
subscribe to this list receive M$ patches and update
information posted BY ME (or sometimes by Peter). (I also
inform all of our custom PC customers of these things). I
maintain (as I have for nearly 10 years at this list), that
blindly letting M$ install every single patch and update on
one's PC is what is "extremely BAD ADVICE". Most
vulnerabilities are negated (as seen under "Mitigating Factors"
when reading about the updates), by a FW (firewall), even the
Native FW. These said updates are NOT NEEDED, nor "should they
be installed anyway" because it's been proven time and time
again that many if not most of the M$ updates create more
problems than they cause--hence the reason for nearly countless
updates to FIX what PREVIOUS updates have screwed up, or never
even patched in the first place.

Additionally, many updates are only needed for those that use
IE as their browser, or read OE email in HTML format...or are
ONLY FOR OE and of course are not even needed if one uses
another email program, (or another browser). These type of
updates are also unneeded.

Furthermore, many of the other updates that are not mitigated
by FW use are not needed if certain XP Services are not used/or
disabled. It's also senseless to blindly install these for the
same reasons mentioned above.

The Auto-Updates "does not discriminate". It does not care
what you have or don't have installed, nor what Services are
disabled, and it will with total disregard for one's setup,
blindly install ALL of the updates. NOT a good thing. Then
users realize and cannot understand why their PC has: grinded
to a halt; and/or certain features no longer work; and/or why
certain programs no longer work, etc., etc.

Anyone at this list is of course always free to reply with a
"please explain" or similar to any of my posts; for which I
will gladly do. I suggest that would be a more appropriate
course of action for you in the future, if you feel the need to
reply.
Thank you,
-Clint

Extremely bad advice.
MS Security Center should be on for everyone who's not a
techie.
AV Monitoring and auto updates are critical components that
will save
the average user from potentially serious problems.
A very worthy use of memory and resources, because so many are
clueless
about AV and firewall issues.

thing to suck
up memory and resources. I never understood the point of it,
all it
does is monitor your AV, Auto updates (which also should be
off), and
the XP firewall, and lets you know when you've turned them
off--something of which I do not need to be told because I KNOW
when
I've turned them off. I also know by just looking at the
System Tray if
my AV and 3rd party firewall is running. (I just opened up
mine and I
don't even see that it even monitors your AV software anymore.
Maybe
the center has to be "on and running" to do that).
