In my time on computers I always had DOS operating
in the background until XP arrived.

I think the Norton Suite might be what he is
looking for.  I used CleanSweep (early
incarnation) and then it was picked up by Norton,
and now I use almost exclusively free- or
shareware.  There are some very fine free
utilities out there and Norton no longer has the
good reputation it held in another incarnation.
