Jeff, I'm running a Compaq Laptop w/Linux Linspire v-5.427 using Belkin
BCM 4306 802.11b/g.
Goto Control center/Network Settings $ Profiles.
Near the bottom check the option " LOAD NETWORK MONITOR ON STARTUP."
Hope your XP has these options.
Good Luck,
Ed

I posted this before but got no responses.
On my laptop running XP, HP Pavlion only a year old with built in wireless.
I can connect to wireless just fine. The icon shoes I am connected to my SSID.
When I go to view wirless networks, nothing is shown there. If I click refresh,
still
nothing shown. At my service center, same thing.
I was traveling this weekend and it never showed any wireless networks, but
there were times
I was connected to someone's.
The thing is, when I am traveling, it would be nice to connect to a customers wireless
internet to search for parts for the job I am working on, but I can never
choose what
wireless to connect to wince they don't show up.
I've unchecked and rechecked let windows manage, biut no help. I know the
problem is on the
computer.
I went into the registry and deleted the wireless entries under controlset, but
no help.
I tried deleting the wireless icon to have it reinstalled, but no luck.
Wireless zero config is connected.
I can not figure out why none of the available networks are not showing. Does
nayone have
any idea for me? I've exhausted m Google and M$ searches.
Thank you.
Jeff
