First you have to be sure that "Classic search" is checked.
Now I can't remember exactly where to do that. Seems like
every time I look around in that area something gets put back
to XP theme. It's either in the search options, or somewhere
in the properties of the taskbar. In short, "Classic search"
is what you're looking for because XP's default search is
pathetic. With the Classic search those advanced options will
stay checked, but note that even with "search hidden files and
folders" checked or whatever it is, you first have to go to
Folder Options and make sure ALL files are visible.

Well Harold here's another one for you to worry about. ;-)
Once you have
checked stuff in advanced options in search like "search system
folders" or
"search sub folders" they should stay checked. If yours
doesn't, it's not
working correctly.

Indexing service is supposed to speed up searches on your
computer. It's a
resource hog and I always turn it off.

Why don't you try out one of the newer desktop search programs
like Google
desktop. It's invisible until you need it and is much faster
than the
search in Windows.

Hello again,

I call it an applet; don't know what else to call it. Whenever
I go to
Start, Search, "For Files or Folders" I have to check "Advanced
Options" in
order to do a complete search. In other words, without that
being checked, I

would not be able to find anything deeper than the root
C-drive, for
example, in Windows or in System32. How do I configure Search
so that
"Advanced Options" is always checked? Seems that Win 98 did all
this with
less complications.

I also want to know if it is advisable to enable or not enable
"Indexing
Service Settings" (basically, what does "indexing service"
do?) --- Harold
