Hi Harold,

You have compatibility mode backwards.  What you are doing is telling WinXP
to emulate another operating system, e.g. Win95, Win98, when running a
particular application.  So you want WinXP to act like Win95 when you run
Notepad+.  That's why there is no option for WinXP.  You are already running
WinXP.

Now you say (third paragraph above) that there is no line for XP. So why 
would I be going to the Compatibility tab if I can't make Notepad+ 
compatible with XP? I'm sure I'm reading it wrong, and it's a moot point now

because "open with" made it work. So I thank Clint for this round of private

tutoring, for reminding me of Metapad and calling "compatibility mode" to my

attention. I always thank Hugh for his idea of the "1st Page" editor 
(someday I'll learn how to use it), and thanks to PCWorks for making all 
this learning possible. --- Happy ending :-)
