it does not only depend on the os, but also on the lib used to compiled
Gem.
it's possible to compile Gem with only jpg suport.
or only tif...
but it is usually safe to use jpeg or tiff file.

maybe the Gem version in Pd-extended just compiles with all the file
formats supported?
