you could also get the current gem svn with:
svn co https://pd-gem.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/pd-gem pd-gem
and configure it with:
./configure --with-libv4l2 --with-pd=/pathtopdsources/
don't forget to install libv4l & libv4l-dev
then set the driver of pix_video with a driver v4l2 message & it should
work without the LD workaround!

I don't know what that error message is.
you should get the latest gem from svn and compile with
libv4l-devel
or libv4l-dev, i don't know how it's called in jaunty.
that seems to be solving many people's problems including my
own.
there is a bunch of posts about it.

Thanks everyone. Yes it looks like I must have been using v4l2. This
solved my problem
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
