yes, list are very slow.
by example, pmpd* object have messages to output list, in order to "list prepend 0" - "list
trim" - "send table-foo"
we add few years ago messages to allow direct writing to table.
using list size > 100 or 1000 gives incredible speed difference.

I don't remember anymore, that was in 2009, when the abstraction was first
posted here on pd-list.
But if you don't believe me, just do some benchmarks on your own and compare
array access with list filtering.
