No, please don't use a zip. From what I remember, DMG is required for 
notarizing the container for distribution. This was the reason for the change 
and it is simple enough to set the required filesystem. HFS+ is not going 
anywhere anytime soon, so FUD is not applicable here.

Also, adding the /Applications link is easy, it's literally a symlink. I have 
it in a makefile if you want:
