Are your PDF created by writing postscript and then distilling? Did you
get with your printer and ask them for preferences on how distiller, and
pagemakers should be set-up? There are many different flavors of rips out
there do not support True Type fonts if possible you should substitute Type
1 fonts. According to our rip vendor it does not support True Type fonts
either, but 99.9% of the time we don't have any problems with this. Make
sure that you are embedding all fonts in your PDF within Distiller. If you
are not writing postscript and distilling it then that could be some of
your problems. We tell all of our customers not to export PDF straight out
of Pagemaker, Indesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop. You would think that
this would be ok, and it is in a web environment, but when it comes to
ripping files in the printing world it is whole other ball game. Also you
would think that since all of these products listed above are adobe
products that they would play nice together, and a PDF exported from any
one them would be the same as one distilled in Acrobat but it is not. Also
you actually have better controls over the PDF that is created once
postscript is written and then distilled within Acrobat. I would not
suggest using a pdf printer, or pdf writer when postscripting out of
Pagemaker either.

hello all
part of what our business does is publish a weekly newspaper.
in dos format, using pagemaker v6.5, we are creating the pdf.
although we take the step to embed all downloadable fonts, our printer
insists that there is a problem with our using truetype fonts and they
default on
their end.
now, it was our understanding that with a pdf, fonts (as independent files)
were no longer an issue.
i feel i'm missing something and hope this discussion can help fill in the
blankls for us.
thanks & all the best - art
