What "non-Microsoft" program? That always helps in getting a good answer to a question.
 
If the security settings don't  take in the "non-Microsoft" application, ask your client to create without security settings and then open and change the security afterwards with the Document Properties menu.
 
Be sure to remember to tell your client to save the document with compatibility settings of the most common version of Acrobat that his customers have.

Hey

I have the following problem: one of our customer has windows2000 PC with
Acrobat Professional 6 on it. Everything works fine, except if I use the
Acrobat PDF printer with security settings in a non Microsoft program than
makes the printer the pdf file but with no security permissions (everything
is allowed).
The security is very important because the customer wants to send some
invoices to his customers. So it wouldn't be great that the customer can
change the prices.
