I'm making manuals in word that contain text, graphics (tech drawings, photos, etc.) most are line art or gray scale images and would like to distribute via email. To get files under 2.5 mb I'm converting to PDF using Acrobat 4.0.

4.0 or 4.0.5? Using Distiller or PDFWriter?

4.0 had a MAJOR bug in Distiller with file sizes...

Here's the problem: sometimes the PDF is smaller than the word.doc (which was essentially the reason for converting to PDF) but other times the PDF is considerably larger.

That's certainly possible - entirely dependant on your settings, how you create the PDF, etc.

I cannot for the life of me understand why or predict which files this will happen to.

Font choice (and embedding thereof). Image types & quality settings. PDFWriter vs. Distiller. Settings for PDFMaker in Word.

Everything plays a part...

I'm looking for the best quality image while keeping the file size to a minimum so any tips re: compression settings would also be most appreciated.
