Subject: [PDF-Basics] spot colors and cmyk graphics

I am checking PDFs for color consistency. What I mean is that if a file is
supposed to print offset using 3 colors (say black, pantone 125 and pantone
412), I want to make sure that any placed graphics such as scans or vector
art do not use colors additional to the black, 125 and 412.

What I'm finding is that pre-flighting some of these files in Acrobat 6 does
not catch what appear to be 4 color process scans placed in the spot color
project. If I use Separation preview to examine the file, and click off on
the CMYK plates, the graphic disappears, yet the pre-flight report claims
only 3 plates in the project.

How can I create a pre-flight module that will catch such inconsistencies?

Any response is greatly appreciated.
