Boy,

I think Distiller 3 is 7 or 8 years old. In computer years, that's
ancient. With Distiller 3, in particular, it's prehistoric.

Distiller 4 (.05) was a major rewrite of how the program functioned. Two
critical changes were:

1) Fonts.

For the first time Distiller was programmed to read and obey the font
embedding restriction tags in TrueType fonts. This would cause PDFs to
fail if a user tried to embed fonts that were flagged not to embed. This
change caused massive confusion and anger amongst the masses, and pitted
consumers against Adobe and font foundries. Macromedia's Fontographer
was a party to the mess, too.

Also, Adobe changed the base 14 fonts from Helvetica and Times, to Arial
and Times New Roman, and others. The reason was that the company was
giving away hundreds of thousands of free readers and had to pay
expensive font licensing fees out of its pocket.

2) Job options. Distiller 3 is clunky if you want to make more than one
flavor of PDF. Distiller 4 provided default and user specified options
for different types of PDFs (i.e. CMYK or RGB; font embedding,
subsetting, or not; different resolutions; etc.).

In general, Acrobat 4 was much more friendly for those who wished to use
PDFs for commercial printing purposes.

That said, Distiller is now up to version 6. Many more features are
included, and Adobe has made significant refinements to version 4.05.

If you want to learn more, you might be able to find out more
information on the Adobe web site. (http://www.adobe.com).

Hope this helps.

Rich

Chris -
I found this in a pdfzone archive - of all places :D
Sounds like it might do the trick.

*Andy,
*
*This Acrobat Distiller 6.0 error is typical for using
*Norton Utilities or to be more specific its
*AutoProtect component under Mac OS X.
*Remove it and it should work as expected.
*
*Regards
*
*Robert Zacherl

Hope it helps,
Mark
