If win32-pthreads is GPLv3+ compatible I would go for the second
   option, since almost any platform is supporting POSIX threads
   nowadays, except mingw32.

The pthreads-win32 software is distributed under the terms of the LGPL
v1.2, so we can link with it.

Please proceed with the http filesystem implementation using POSIX
threads.  IMHO the best option would be to detect in configuration
time if posix threads are available and, if they are not, emit a
warning and not include the http filesystem in the compilation.
