In general.
We researched the possibilities of tablets, translations of word handwriting (character by character
and continuous handwriting)in different languages (Eng/Ger,Fr, and Dutch)and our experiences are
that each word is translating (very slowly), but........ you need extra people to correct the words.
In other terms, you know what you have written, but the 'translation' gives total other words/results.
One of the fifty (usual/simply) words is correct. The 'translator' of microsoft (xp) knows a few words,
even in english, and the 'translations' are very poor. So, we stopped with translations from handwriting
till there is another/better 'translator' of microsoft or another company.
Now, our solution is that we take the forms on the tablet and the person can make be notes on/in the form
with handwriting (mobile-online or offline) and the secretary does the rest (convert to data).
The other way, if you want only (fast) handwriting for a note (eg plant, medical,draws, etc) use the form
as documentation for uploading / downloading, printing and archiving.
Answers; on your questions 1- 4
1. Is there any way to use a stylus on the tablet and get the data to go into the correct field?
Answer:a) for so far we know, there are other stylus, but we have not try it.
b) you can write in the field that you want and also the translation(s)
are coming in that (data)field and if you are connecting, in the database
2. Can the data be recognized as data or is it simply an image?
Answer: handwriting is translated in data and can be saved in database
3. Will Windows XP allow the handwritten notes to go in designated form fields? Can the notes be read as data?
Answer: see before
4. Is this a hardware problem, software problem or both?
Answer: this is a real software problem of microsoft (xp)

I'm working on a project where we would like to use wireless PC tablets to
record test data on the fly. The data sheets are part of a multi page test
procedure (in pdf format) that will have form fields for test data entry.
It can be very cumbersome and slow to navigate through the fields and tap
in the data using the tablet (Fujitsu 3500) on-screen key board. Some tests
have dozens of pages of test data sheets with dozens of data fields on each
sheet. Need to save the finished test data sheets so they can be approved
and submitted electronically.
1. Is there any way to use a stylus on the tablet and get the data to go
into the correct field?
2. Can the data be recognized as data or is it simply an image?
3. Will Windows XP allow the handwritten notes to go in designated form
fields? Can the notes be read as data?
4. Is this a hardware problem, software problem or both?
Hardware and software ideas to solve this would be welcome.
