Do you know a way around the limited characters problem?

Why can't you just type the text under the default slot and check as read
only? I have done this without text disappearing.

Our attempted solution
The process we've tried so far (which we think should work) is as
follows:
-Customize the type in the field.
-Open the Field Properties window.
-On the Appearance tab click 'Read Only'.
-Click 'OK'.
This locks the field but makes the type disappear.
If you upgrade to Acrobat 6, this won't happen anymore...
OR if you want to stay with Acrobat 5, then you need to write a
_javascript_ that will do the "read only" setting for that, since that won't
clear out the text.
