You are talking of those comb fields. Such fields should really be a thing of the past, but there are forms managers how really like them...

Anyway, if you are using Acrobat (Reader) 6 exclusively, you now have the "comb field" property. But, as said, this works only in Acrobat 6.

Otherwise, the PDF imaging system has a parameter Tc which controls the distance between characters. Having this parameter in your field definition in the PDF document will display the field's contents with a certain distance between the characters. The problem here is that this parameter has no user interface at all.

The least cumbersome way is to create a master field using an EPS file which contains the according PDFMARK operator, and send it through Distiller. Then, you can copy and adjust this field.

There have been descriptions on how to do this by D.P. Story. You would search the PDFZone.com and the PlanetPDF archives for that.

Hope, this can help.

I am trying to find a way to expand the contents of a text field to allow for tick marks between characters on the printed form.

All of my forms currently just cover the tick marks with a read-only white box if the form is filled in and printed, but leaves the tick marks visible if the form is not filled in and just printed.

Recently, however, I encountered a very cool feature on a PDF that I would like to replicate. Anybody know how to do it?
