Glyn - What you are seeing is 'typical'. RGB and CMYK will not produce
the same colors when converted. Without going into extreme detail, your
best bet is to call your printer and ask for the output profile of the
press you will be printing on. They should be able to explain where to
load the profile into your system.

>From there, you will need to turn Color Management on in InDesign and
select the CMYK profile you were given. This profile is your "CMYK
Working Space". If you know where your images came from, i.e. what
scanner, digital camera, web and you have a profile for this input
device, you can select this as your RGB working space. 

Click OK and recreate your PDF with these settings. You should get
considerably better output.
