I know how to accomplish this on a that Macintosh (iMovie can create movies
from slides and and add music) but I wasasked recently as to what software
and hardware I would need to acquire to convert a series of images into a
slide show with music in the background that would 'play' from a CD using
Windows Media Player on a PC ...

Can this be done in a PDF with simply Acrobat ?

You know, use transitions between the PDF pages and have it auto play with
music ?

slide show with music so that it would play on a DVD player (I am pretty
sure this CAN'T be done using PDF...

Yes, sure ;-)

Simply use Media Cleaner to convert your iMovie movie to a Windows media player movie.

But obviously, you'd better choose to create only one cross-platform movie, using a format like MPG1 or MPG2, especially if you want it to be played on DVD players.
