There are possible problems on older RIPS, with exported PDF's which will
contain double byte (CID) fonts.

If this is the case, then the option is for the creator of the PDF to make
it using PS/Distiller.  I would also suggest that if they have access to
Acrobat 6, distiller, that they use PDFX/1a job options.
