Steve,

When MS Publisher print it's output is passed to PostScript via Windows GDI
and the Windows PostScript driver. When you print composite as you intent
the MS Publisher separation and traping functionality dies, and spot colours
are converted to their screen representation, i.e. downloads to PostScript
as RGB.

Creating a composite PostScript file and converting that to PDF with
Distiller will NOT change that, though you might be able to succesfully
in-RIP separate it into CMYK plates. However, neither PageMaker or
QuarkXpress can reliably separate such a job.

If you want to run a composite workflow and need to make spot colour
separations, the only *reasonable* (biased statement - I wrote the software
for it) route I know of, is to use Colour Chameleon for conversion to PDF.
Colour Chameleon will let you re-apply the spot colour information in a two
step process:

1) Load the PostScript file into Colour Chameleon, which will
analyse it and present to you an editable list of the
   colours it contain.
2) Edit the colours you need to modify. Conversion from RGB
to a spot colour is easily set-up
3) Create the PDF. DO NOT place PDF's into PageMaker or
QuakrXpress if you want to *reliably* preserve spot colour
information. Instead, export all pages as PostScript Level 1
EPS's and use them instead. That WILL work, however.

Details on how Colour Chameleon works can be found at:
http://www.pdfstore.com/details.asp?ProdID=215.

If you choose to test it please make sure to apply 'Patch 08' found at
http://www.grafikhuset.dk/colourchameleondownload.asp.

Note that the current version of Colour Chameleon in NOT working with
Acrobat 6.0. However, it works pretty well with Acrobat 4.05, 5.0 or 5.05
(recommended).

Hope this helps.

Let me be more specific. I can create the PDF. However, the only way I
seem to be able to get separations is when the Publisher file print dialog
is set to separations, resulting in a multipage pdf, one for each color.

I would like to have a composite separatable pdf so that I don't have to try
to reimpose each separation in a layout program. I would like to do the
separations in the layout program rather than have a pre-separated pdf.
