A customer submitted a pdf file to us for copying on our DocuTech. It errors out at the DocuTech because "Garamond-Three Bold" was not embedded and the "substition is off."

When I deactivate all the fonts on my G4, open up the same pdf and preflight it, my report tells me that actually 5 fonts have not been embedded.

Which very well be the case.

When I activate those 5 fonts on my G4 and repreflight the file, it tells me all fonts are embedded. I don't understand.

The preflight may be including an action that is set to embed fonts, and if the font is available on the system, it will do so.

I know the customer specifically set her options to embed fonts. I thought embedding fonts meant that the receiver didn't have to have those fonts resident.

What version of Distiller is your customer using? What compatibility level is it set for? What platform is it on? If they are using version 4, has it been upgraded to version 4.05. There was a bug with 4.0, more pronounced on the PC platform, that incorrectly read font embedding information and would not embed fonts that should be. If it is a PostScript font, maybe the customer only has the screen font and not the PostScript.

And why isn't it erring out for all 5 non-embedded fonts then?

Maybe the other fonts reside on the Docutech RIP and it is picking up those fonts, or it is picking up the fonts from your system.

I tried redistilling the file in Acrobat 5 and it seems to have worked.

Which leaves me to believe that the customer has a problem version.

Shall I just ask the customer to distill the file in a higher version of Acrobat in the future?

Absolutely.
