Ed,

There is nothing in Acrobat Distiller joboptions specific
to Multiple Master fonts, or any particular font format,
for that matter. Properly generated PostScript from drivers
or applications that reference Multiple Master fonts and
either (1) have those fonts and instances embedded in the
PostScript or (2) have the fonts and instances available to
the Distiller in one of the Distiller's font directories
should be no problem in terms of successful distillation.

There could be any number of causes for your problem, though.
I would initially suspect a problem with the PDF import. I assume
that the PDF files have all fonts embedded AND can print / RIP
outside of your QuarkXPress documents. Is that correct?
QuarkXPress' PDF import has always been a bit dicey. Perhaps
it is corrupting the references to the Multiple Master fonts
and/or not passing the font data correctly into the generated
PostScript output stream.

An experiment that you could perform would be to take one of the
"failing" PDF files and save it as EPS from Acrobat, fonts embedded,
and try placing that EPS into the QuarkXPress document instead of
the original PDF. If that works, then the problem is the QuarkXPress
PDF import.
