Hi Kenton,

When I worked with Enfocus, I visited the prepress and print production team
at Microsoft. They used two strategies - one was to set up guidelines that
people could follow if they wanted to submit 'preflighted PDF" files to
them, and another was to set up a way to automatically submit suspect PDF
files to Enfocus Pitstop Server - they built custom profiles and Action
lists that would 'convert' the submitted PDF files into a known state and
then process them. They set up folders for 2 color jobs and CMYK jobs, and
these folders were watched by Enfocus Pitstop Server - the Enfocus server
does not care what condition the files were in -it either converted the
files into the desired state, or if it failed, placed the file in a failed
folder and generated a report as to what the problem was.

Time Magazine took a different approach - they simply run all files through
preflight and reject all files that fail - Time did not feel that they
should 'auto-fix' PDF files, and demand that the PDF files be able to pass
PDF/X verification.

They build a fantastic site for people to learn 'what it takes' to get a PDF
file into the required 'print ready' condition that Time will accept.

There are several things that must be set up properly to generate reliable
PDF files. Adobe supports PDF/X in their latest version (Acrobat 6 Distiller
ships with this as a selectable option) but the system, authoring
application and sometime print drivers must also be correct. I think the
Time site is a great place to send your customers, and I would encourage you
to build a custom "Scrapbook Retailer Magazine" site for your Advertisers to
visit.

There are several places to learn more about PDF/X

There are several vendors who make PDF/X technologies (this is a link to a
place to buy them);

And of course (our sponsors!) ;

Hope this helps !
