Actually, even if you don't change the file, Acrobat 6 saves the file with a PDF 1.5 label. But if nothing is changed to result in any incompatible features being used, then that PDF 1.5 file should be quite openable, albeit with a message, in earlier versions of Acrobat and Reader. Note that that Leonard's advice requires Acrobat 6 Professional, not Acrobat 6 Standard.
