Correct. That was added in PageMaker 6.5, I believe.

this option, text copied from the resulting pdf retained soft returns

It's not an Acrobat option, it's a PageMaker option.

Yes, InDesign will do it.



 but ID's pdfs are much larger than distiller's even if
you choose screen or ebook generation.  The pdfs are for the web.


I would recommend that you look at software such as our PDF Enhancer (http://www.pdfsages.com/enhancer.html) that can reduce the size of your InDesign generated PDF and maintain all the structure.
