Well, really, Ms Stein was right then and right now. But she wasn't criticizing Oakland when she wrote "There is no there there." She was referring to the fact that her childhood home in Oakland - yes, she spent part of her childhood in Oakland - had been torn down. Oakland, at least much of it, is very nice with some very nice, down-to-earth people, and has been subject to much unfair and uninformed criticism. And now back to our discussion of pdfs...
