There is a software program that will convert native files to PDF.
(In case you want to skip the convert to PS process)
We have used this software very successfully.
Take a look at i.DOC at

Subject: [PDF] automating .PS conversion
I have a folder on a network share that is populated with various docs and I need to convert them to .PDF. I need to convert them to .PS before they hit my watch folder. Is there a program to batch process/print .doc, .txt, .rtf, to .PS so I can automate the distiller process?
