You may also be interested in some free tools from the folks a www.sysinternals.com <http://www.sysinternals.com/> called regmon and filemon. In fact you may want their entire pstools collection. They'll allow you to monitor what is actually getting loaded, from what location, what reg keys get accessed, etc., in order to better determine precisely what is happening instead of speculating on possibilities.
Yes I take your point. Their utilities look promising I'll take a look at them.
And as I said in a parallel message I'll try to 'capture' an instal of Reader from a little-used machine.
