Would you happen to recall the specific .DLL that causes the problem?
Unfortunately, I have installed numerous applications and Microsoft
security patches, and don't know exactly when the capture plug-in
started failing.

I am glad to hear it isn't Adobe playing with us, but my regard for
Microsoft and it's coding house of cards has dropped another notch.

I WAS going to upgrade to Acrobat 6.0 (as they restored the paper
capture plug-in), but Enfocus discontinued their Power-Up PDF plug-in,
and they want a fortune ($600) for the higher-end tool that has the
functionality I need. Maybe I can find a place that sells it at a
discount.

Dear Harry Gilbert,

We attempted to use the free paper capture plugin with Adobe Acrobat 5.0
but found that one of the *.dlls that the Acrobat plugin installed was
old code. When we installed other software it updated the .dll and
disabled Paper Capture. It is probable that the Paper Capture plugin
for Acrobat 4.05 also uses some older .dlls. Have you installed any new
software since you installed the Adobe Acrobat plug-in. If you have,
reinstalling Adobe Acrobat will fix your Adobe Capture plugin but will
disable the new software.

If this is indeed the problem you are experiencing then you are not
alone. It is the nature of software to reuse code whenever possible,
and the same nature to fix bugs whenever found. It is the annoying side
effect that some fixes result in disabling other software relying on the
flawed code to work as expected. If I remember correctly the .dll that
trapped us was a standard microsoft windows .dll.

Good Luck,
Sam Brenner

I declined to update my Acrobat 4.05 because Adobe removed the paper
capture plug-in in later versions. I make occasional use of the ability
to scan in documents and use the paper convert tool to make the
resulting PDF searchable. Now I find that two copies of Acrobat 4.05 --
one at work, and another at home -- both simultaneously have failures of
the paper capture plug-in. The page is recognized, and an error message
"An unrecoverable error occurred in Paper Capture" appears when the
converted page is about to be written to file. Is this a real "error" or
did Adobe put a Trojan in the program to disable paper capture?
