You might want to reinstall the Quark 6 on your computer.

My experience with Export to PDF is that it makes bloated PDFs, but it isn't
generally slow. It is using a Jaws PDF engine instead of the true Adobe
Distiller.

If in Quark you use "Adobe PDF" as your Printer Description and use
Printer/Save as File/Format Postscript as your output option (and then
Acrobat Distill the .ps), you should be able to create quick, normal sized
PDFs. I would not rely on the Quarz PDF engine for anything professional.

I now use Export as PDF as emergency backup should everything else fail.
