Try printing to Acrobat Distiller, rather than Adobe pdf. Create a postscript file and then distill.

They are the same thing. In Acrobat 6, the printer formerly known as "Acrobat Distiller" was renamed to "Adobe PDF". Printing to Adobe PDF is exactly the same thing as creating a PostScript file and distilling.
