George, I'm also looking for answers to a related problem In my office, we have a pre-built index  (using Catalog) that lets our users do a full text search of over 5000 pdf files. Since the index is prebuilt, a user with Acrobat Reader (/w search), can retrieve results almost instantaneously.  The library is on a NT server that connects through a mapped drive on our LAN. Acrobat 6 takes so long that I have written it off as completely unusable.  I have no idea why ???
