Greetings -

I did a rate card for the publication I produce in newly-installed InDesign
CS. Masthead with drop shadows on a color field. Large CMYK photo. The whole
page is CMYK. Text boxes on top of the photo with some transparency to allow
a bit of the photo to show through. Printed fine from InDesign to my Epson
inkjets. In fact, it was all quite fun until I decided to make a medium
resolution PDF of the page. That was 5 hours ago.

I had added a hyperlink to a website in InDesign. In Safari, the text for
the hyperlink was invisible, but the link worked. In Acrobat 6 and Reader 6
the text was present but the link did not work. Got around that by doing the
link in Acrobat.

I had a text box colored a bluish gray and set for no transparency. Looked
fine in the PDF on screen, but printed with no gray, instead showing the
colors under the text box seemingly inverted. Perhaps that happened because
of an applied round corner effect. Got around that by duplicating the text
box, changing the content of the dupe to unassigned, making it white, and
placing it exactly behind the original.

But the flaw I haven't gotten around is in the masthead. The masthead is
medium blue, solid, with large white type with a drop shadow. On screen and
when I rasterize the PDF in Photoshop 7, the blue is all one color except
for the white type and the dark shadow. But when I print (to an Epson 1270
and an Epson C80, from Panther.3.3, using both the Epson drivers and
Gimp-Print) the type is enclosed snugly in a darker blue rectangle.

Would redoing the file as RGB help?

Is the road from InDesign to PDF more troublesome than I might have hoped?

Suggestions or pointers to reference appreciated.

Also: in 2 recent PDFs of ads, I seemed to discover that grayscale images
placed in CMYK files (in Illustrator CS in this case) work when rasterizing
the file to a dumb old TIFF for Quark 4.11 - but don't work when making a
PDF. When the grayscales were converted to CMYK mode, the remade PDFs were
fine. Is this "the way it is"? TIA...
