I know it's not recommended to have Reader and AB on the same system, but I
do and it works perfectly for me.
What is your/Adobe's rationale for the recommendation?

Bottom line is that you should not have both Acrobat (the full product) and
the Reader installed on the same system. This is even truer for differing
versions of same.
With regards to Acrobat "documentation", there is none other than the PDF
files on the CDROM, which do provide a tremendous amount of information
assuming that you get the program installed such that you can read those
files. No printed documentation comes with the product.
